Overview of SLFUW
The SRI LANKA FEDERATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN (SLFUW) is a non-governmental organization open to any woman graduate from a University recognized by the International Federation of University Women (IFUW).
It was- Established in 1941.
- Affiliated to IFUW in 1946.
- Affiliated to the All-Ceylon Women’s Conference in 1956.
- Declared an approved charity in 1982.
- Incorporated by Act of Parliament. No. 12 of 1985.
General Objectives
- To represent and take action on behalf of the University women of Sri Lanka;
- To promote co-operation, friendship and understanding among University women, irrespective of race, religion or political opinion;
- To encourage research by University women;
- To encourage women of education to take their due share of responsibility in society:
- To acquaint itself of any proposed legislative or other measures affecting women and take appropriate steps to safeguard the rights and interests of women in general and University women in particular:
- To render social service, and to undertake charitable educational and social welfare activities for women in particular and other persons in general;
- To work with any other organized body having similar aims and objectives;
- To do all such other things as may be necessary for the benefit and welfare of its members.
Management
Is by an Executive Council of 23 members who are elected annually except for the Co-ordinator International Relations who is elected for three years.
Activities
cover a wide range and are directed towards
- strengthening the ORGANIZATION;
- upgrading the skills and knowledge of the MEMBERSHIP, providing opportunities for scholarships, participation in national and international forums and seminars, recognizing their special achievements, re-training and obtaining a data base regarding unemployed women graduates;
- providing scholarships and helping in wel- fare services for GRADUANDS;
- providing COMMUNITY education, and a forum for discussion of public issues;
- participation in activities individually and in COLLABORATION with other
- organizations for the development of women;
- providing RELIEF MEASURES to affected communities in times of disaster;
- participation in IFUW activities and those of its affiliates.
